"The greatest threat to our environment today is climate change."

24 October 2000
The Rt Hon Tony Blair, Prime Minister

Climate change is a serious issue. The planet is warming faster than at any other time in the last 10,000 years and the world faces an increasing risk from super-disasters caused by global warming, such as droughts, floods, cyclones and infectious diseases.

WWF-UK's priority is to ensure that the UK - our government and businesses especially - continues to take an international leadership role on climate change.

But we can all help. Here are a just a few suggestions that would make a difference.

Cut down on fuel consumption
There is a direct link between CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
  • When buying a new car make fuel efficiency your first consideration. The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) on 01932 828882 can offer advice on the relative environmental merits of most cars, as can the Vehicle Certification Agency, 0117 951 5151
  • Walk, cycle or use public transport rather than a car whenever possible - it's good for the environment and healthier for you!

Save energy
In the UK, households are responsible for 30 per cent of energy use.
  • Switch off all lights and electrical appliances when not in use – your TV left on standby can still use a quarter of full power. See how your TV and video fare at www.mtprog.com
  • Don't overfill the kettle - only boil as much water as you need
  • Let clothes dry naturally rather than using a tumble drier

Use energy efficiently
The average UK household could save £250 per annum by taking energy efficiency measures.
  • As much as 20 per cent of heat can be lost through draughts. Ensure you have at least 15cm of loft insulation, use draught excluders and put foil behind radiators on outside walls to reflect the heat back inside
  • Choose energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs

Global warming is caused by burning fuels such as oil, coal and gas. This affects our climate, leading to more extreme and violent weather.

Unless we change our behaviour, there could be more floods at home and abroad, and species that can't adapt will die out.

WWF is lobbying government and industry to take action, but
everyone can make a difference.
