Dolphins are intelligent, inquisitive and friendly creatures. But tragically, every year, thousands of them accidentally drown after
getting caught in fishing gear.
In fact, 300,000 dolphins,
porpoises and small whales die
this way every year.
River dolphins are also affected by chemical pollution and man-made dams and barrages that restrict their movement into suitable habitats, creating isolated pods of dolphinsIsolation leads to inbreeding in many pods which further threatens their existence as weaknesses in their genetic make-up are amplified. - leaving them less able to survive normal difficulties.
But with your help, there is hope.
By adopting a dolphin, from just £3 a month, you can help us to:
- Ensure the new UK Marine and Coastal Access Act improves management of UK seas, whilst protecting our valuable marine life, including dolphins
- Create a robust UK-wide network of marine protected areas covering key marine habitats
- Support WWF-India's rescue network for river dolphins – a critical help in the dry season when crop irrigation causes water levels to drop to a point where dolphins become stranded.
- Support WWF's global work to develop internationally recognised standards to ensure new dams on rivers such as the Amazon and Mekong are designed and built in ways that minimise their impact on the environment.
- Promote ways to reduce the accidental 'bycatch' of dolphins by encouraging the use of selective fishing gear
- Your support will also help fund other essential WWF conservation work around the world
