The illegal logging issue

Illegal logging and the trade in illegal timber and wood-based products is a global problem. Illegal logging occurs in tropical forests as well as temperate and boreal forests, and governments lose billions of Euro annually due to illegal logging.

Illegal logging occurs when timber is harvested, transported, processed, bought or sold in violation or circumvention of national or sub-national laws. Illegal activities often have a devastating impact on biodiversity as well human communities.

Illegal logging is a hot issue on the international forest agenda, and in 2003 the European Commission released an action plan for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) to address the issue.

WWF calls on European governments to take action against illegal logging. The Government Barometer presented on this website is an attempt to put focus on EU governments' actions against illegal logging and forest crime.
