Possibly the greatest challenge we face in tackling environmental issues lies in education. But demonstrating the realities of man's continuing, devastating impact on the environment is not just a task for schools, government agencies and charities; it is, above all, the role of the media.

The entries for this year’s awards exemplify the power the media has to change public opinion, to explain complex issues and to inspire people into action.

The evidence suggests that there is a real appetite among the media to meet the huge challenge of getting the environmental message across.

The finalists in each category demonstrated real investigative flair, engaged people and, crucially, outlined possible solutions to complex environmental issues.

The winners from each category, along with the Awareness Award and the Andrew Lees Memorial Award, were announced at the Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation on Wednesday, 7 November 2007 at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, London, E14
