To win: three x two places (six places in total) on a research trip with the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) on the research yacht Silurian

  • For the chance to win, you must tell us, in 500 words, why you deserve a place on this trip of a lifetime. Mark your entry ‘Silurian Comp’ and send it to Action Mag, WWF-UK, Living Planet Centre, Rufford House, Brewery Road, Woking, Surrey GU21 4LL. Or email your entry to competition@wwf.org.uk, with ‘Silurian Comp’ as the email subject title
  • This competition is open to all WWF members, excluding employees of WWF
  • The closing date for entries is Friday 17 March 2017
  • One entry per person only
  • No purchase necessary
  • There are three places for three winners, plus a companion each (six places in total), on the research trip with HWDT
  • A member of WWF-UK staff will also be present on the trip
  • This competition is for over-16s only
  • Under-18s must bring a parent or legal guardian as their companion
  • The trip will take place for two days, from 3-4 August 2017
  • The prize includes food and accommodation on Silurian for two days, but does not include transport to and from the Isle of Mull
  • The trip is likely to depart at 9.30am on 3 August 2017, so prize winners are free to organise accommodation in Tobermory or Oban the night before. A list of hotels will be provided
  • HWDT will confirm full details, and conduct a comprehensive risk assessment for the trip covering all activities onboard Silurian, once the competition winners have been announced
  • All prize winners must independently, be able to:
    • Follow verbal and visual instructions
    • Enjoy being on a boat all day in all types of weather, tolerating long periods of time in the sun, cold, wind and/or rain while remaining sedentary to make observations
    • Tolerate varying temperatures that are, on the whole, cool
    • Comfortably traverse narrow passages and steep stairs on the boat (there are areas where wheelchair access would be difficult)
    • Remain balanced and agile to cope with the constantly varying motions of the boat, the need to lean over for clipping and unclipping yourself to safety harnesses, and for bracing against waves
    • Have one hand always available to hold onto the boat
    • Assist with visual observations for marine mammals – this includes standing for periods of one hour at the mast, scanning the waters for movement
    • Observe small dorsal fins from long distances and hear high-frequency calls (to be able to undertake acoustic monitoring)
    • Wear heavy-duty waterproof outfits while equipped with a lifejacket and harness, which must be worn at all times on-deck. This equipment can tend to feel heavy and restrictive
  • All prize winners will be required to complete a medical questionnaire before the trip
  • As with all wild animals, sightings are unpredictable and there is no guarantee of seeing marine mammals during the trip
  • The direction of travel of Silurian and the selection of anchorage will be at the skipper’s discretion and will be subject to weather conditions at the time. There is a network of channels, bays and sea lochs which allow for shelter from winds and high seas, and a variety of overnight anchorages to escape the worst of any foul weather
  • The prize winners will be asked to report back on their experiences, in the form of a diary, quotes, tweets, a blog or images, for a future issue of Action magazine. The details will be agreed with the Action editor and the prize winners before the trip
  • The prizes cannot be exchanged for the cash equivalent or for an alternative in any circumstances
