Backing for offshore wind farm at Scarweather Sands, Swansea Bay
WWF Cymru applauds the decision of the National Assembly for Wales' Planning Committee to support the offshore wind farm at Scarweather Sands, Swansea Bay.
Lying three miles off the coast of Porthcawl, the Scarweather Sands windfarm has the potential to produce enough clean electricity to supply 80,000 homes - the equivalent to a town the size of Swansea.
"There has never been a greater need for clean energy in our world then there is today. Wales can make an important contribution by producing energy from renewable resources. Climate change is the biggest threat to the planet and without turning opportunities such as Scarweather Sands into reality carbon emissions will grow and the threat will worsen," said Morgan Parry, Head of WWF Cymru.
"Renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines, solar panels, wave devices and tidal stream technology all have extremely localised impacts when carefully sited. It is all about getting the right technology in the right place. Wales has natural resources that have the potential to be at the forefront of the development of offshore marine renewables," he added.
As a result of the Committee's decision a notice of intention will be issued to all Assembly Members, giving each five days to register dissatisfaction that the order is made. This will be made as soon as possible after the Assembly's Summer recess.
"We hope that the National Assembly will continue to honour its legal duty for sustainable development and support the courageous decision of this Committee to encourage renewable energy technologies in Wales," added Mr Parry.
WWF Cymru is campaigning for a Marine Act, which would streamline, the hundreds of laws that currently governs our seas. The planning process for Scarweather Sands has demonstrated that the current system is too complex and costly and needs to be reviewed.
Cefnogaeth i ddatblygiad ffermydd gwynt Scarweather Sands, Bae Abertawe
Mae WWF Cymru yn croesawu penderfyniad y Pwyllgor Cynllunio i roi caniatâd i'r datblygiad yn Scarweather Sands.
Mae gan y ddatblygiad, y potensial i greu diogon o drydan glân ar gyfer 80,000 o dai - ardal yr un maint â thref Abertawe.
"Mae'r angen am ynni glan yn ein byd wedi cyrraedd penllanw. Gall Cymru wneud cyfraniad bwysig drwy gynhyrchu ynni o adnoddau adnewyddadwy. Newid yn yr hinsawdd yw'r bygythiad mwyaf i'n byd heddiw ac onibai ein bod yn troi cyfleoedd fel Scarweather yn realiti, bydd allyriannau carbon yn parhau i dyfu a bydd y sefyllfa yn gwaethygu," dywedodd Morgan Parry, Pennaeth WWF Cymru.
"Gall technoleg ynni adnewyddadwy, fel twrbeini gwynt, paneli solar, a thechnoleg ynni'r môr gael effaith lleol yn unig drwy eu lleoli yn ofalus. Oherwydd potensial gwych adnoddau naturiol Cymru, gallwn fod ar flaen y gad wrth ddatblygu rhai o'r datblygiadau alltraeth. Ond fel mae'r broses yn Scarweather yn profi, gall y system ddeddfwriaeth gymhlethu pethau," ychwanegodd Mr Parry.
Cred WWF Cymru y gall Deddf Forol gynnig system ddeddfwriaethol ar gyfer delio gyda hyn i osod cynseiliau clir ac i roi llai o bwysau ar y gost i'r cyhoedd.
Mae WWF Cymru yn gobeithio bydd y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol yn parhau i gyfrannu tuag at agenda ddatblygiad cynaladwy drwy gefnogi'r datblygiad technoleg ynni adnewyddadwy pwysig hon.
