How you can help
A guilt free Christmas doesn't mean being a Scrooge!
WWF Cymru has issued a nation-wide challenge to Welsh shoppers this Christmas to ditch over-packaged, imported foods and junk presents in favour of traditional Welsh produce and ethically sourced gifts.
It has prepared a list of tips to guide consumers to a more environmentally friendly festive season aimed at benefiting the local economy as well as supporting the livelihoods of people across the world.
WWF Cymru believes that through a bit of thought in what goes into our shopping baskets we can limit the impact we have on the environment this Christmas and still have a great time.

Mae WWF Cymru yn gofyn i siopwyr trwy Gymru benbaladr y Nadolig hwn i anwybyddu bwydydd wedi'u mewnforio a'u gorbacio ac anrhegion sothach a phrynu cynnyrch traddodiadol o Gymru.
Mae wedi paratoi rhestr o awgrymiadau i arwain defnyddwyr i wyl fwy eco gyfeillgar gyda'r nod o roi budd i'r economi lleol yn ogystal â chefnogi bywoliaeth pobl ar draws y byd. Mae WWF Cymru yn credu y gallwn, trwy feddwl ychydig am yr hyn sy'n mynd i'n basgedi siopa, gyfyngu ar yr effaith a gawn ar yr amgylchedd y Nadolig hwn a dal i gael amser gwych.

WWF Cymru believes that through a bit of thought in what goes into our shopping baskets we can limit the impact we have on the environment this Christmas and still have a great time.
Top five food tips
- Buy local, seasonal, winter vegetables (these include sprouts, carrots, cabbage, leeks, onions, parsnips, swede and potatoes) Support your local farmers' market (visit Farmers Markets to find out your nearest farmers' market )
- Look for meat from traditional breeds of sheep, beef or poultry, raised naturally and locally. Ask your butcher about the history of the animal. If you choose a bird opt for free-range organic or even try an alternative like goose.
- If you can't buy local, buy fairtrade products such as fruit, nuts and chocolate (visit Fairtrade for a list of fair trade products in your shops)
- Buy wine with real corks - not a single tree is cut down in their production and it is one of the most environmentally friendly industries possible. It provides essential employment for the people who work in the cork forests of Europe and maintains vital habitat for the endangered wildlife of these forests such as the Iberian lynx and the Barbary ape.
- Try to buy food and drink packaged in materials that can be recycled in your area, such as paper and glass and avoid disposable items on the Christmas table such as paper serviettes.
Top five generic tips
- Over five million Christmas trees are bought each year in the UK. Most are thrown away after the festivities, creating thousands of tonnes of waste. Don't throw your tree in the rubbish this year replant it or get it recycled - most councils offer this service and the woodchips are used in public gardens for the benefit of everyone.
- If you send Christmas cards make sure they support a charity like WWF which are printed on recycled paper. Even better send electronic Christmas cards to friends and family on the internet and save on paper and resources. The Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period. It is estimated that up to 1 billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK. (Waste Watch)
- Buy presents that make a difference to the world as well as individuals e.g. adopt an endangered animal from WWF or look for gifts with natural components such as organic cotton in bedding and towels or handcrafted toys made from wood. Visit www.wwf.org.uk/shop
- Buy gifts that are durable. Things which break easily will just end up in the bin and cannot be reused by anybody. Look out for special gifts such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) wood products - from wooden spoons to chairs these products really do make a difference to the management of our forests. For such gifts visit www.wwf.org.uk/shop
- Set yourself a challenge - how empty can you keep your bin? Think about how you can reduce the amount of waste you produce at home and at work. Remember to pass unwanted presents to your local charity shop rather than throwing them away - there is sure to be someone who will like them!
Top 5 things to avoid
- Junk presents and flimsy decorations, which will only be used once and thrown away. The average Welsh household throws out 25 kilograms of rubbish per week amounting to 1.5 million tonnes going to landfill every year
- Out of season vegetables e.g salad and imported meats that have travelled thousands of miles by air before reaching the shops.
- Goods which involve unnecessary packaging or complicated mixed material packaging which can make recycling difficult.
- Avoid battery powered toys. But if you must buy them, make sure you buy rechargeable batteries - disposable batteries are a growing problem as they contain toxic chemicals that are highly dangerous for the environment.
- Use wrapping paper sparingly - and always buy recycled paper. It is estimated that over Christmas as much as 83 square km of wrapping paper will end up in rubbish bins across the UK, enough to cover an area larger than Guernsey. (Waste Watch)

O'r diwedd - Nadolig dieuog heb fod yn gybydd!
Mae WWF Cymru yn gofyn i siopwyr trwy Gymru benbaladr y Nadolig hwn i anwybyddu bwydydd wedi'u mewnforio a'u gorbacio ac anrhegion sothach a phrynu cynnyrch traddodiadol o Gymru.
Mae wedi paratoi rhestr o awgrymiadau i arwain defnyddwyr i wyl fwy eco gyfeillgar gyda'r nod o roi budd i'r economi lleol yn ogystal â chefnogi bywoliaeth pobl ar draws y byd. Mae WWF Cymru yn credu y gallwn, trwy feddwl ychydig am yr hyn sy'n mynd i'n basgedi siopa, gyfyngu ar yr effaith a gawn ar yr amgylchedd y Nadolig hwn a dal i gael amser gwych.
Pum prif awgrym am fwyd
- Prynwch lysiau gaeaf lleol, tymhorol (gan gynnwys sbrowts, moron, bresych, cennin, nionod, pannas, rwdins a thatws). Cefnogwch eich ffermwr organig a'ch marchnad ffermwyr lleol (ewch i Farmers Markets i gael gwybod ble mae'r farchnad ffermwyr agosaf atoch).
- Chwiliwch am gig o fathau traddodiadol o ddefaid, eidion a dofednod, a fegir yn naturiol ac yn lleol. Gofynnwch i'ch cigydd am hanes yr anifail. Os cewch aderyn, dewiswch un buarth neu organig, neu rhowch gynnig ar fath arall, megis gwydd.
- Os na allwch brynu nwyddau lleol, prynwch ffrwythau, cnau a siocled masnach deg (ewch i Fairtrade i gael rhestr o gynhyrchion masnach deg yn eich siopau).
- Prynwch win gyda chyrc go iawn - ni thorrir yr un goeden i lawr i'w cynhyrchu a dyma un o'r diwydiannau mwyaf eco gyfeillgar posibl. Mae'n rhoi gwaith hanfodol i'r bobl sy'n gweithio yng nghoedwigoedd corc Ewrop ac yn cynnal cynefinoedd hollbwysig i'r bywyd gwyllt sydd dan fygythiad yn y coedwigoedd hyn megis lyncs Iberia ac epa Barbari.
- Ceisiwch brynu bwyd a diod wedi'u pacio mewn deunyddiau y gellir eu hailgylchu yn eich ardal chi, megis papur a gwydr, a pheidiwch â defnyddio eitemau tafladwy ar eich bwrdd dydd Nadolig megis napcynnau papur.
Pum prif awgrym cyffredinol
- Prynir dros bum miliwn o goed Nadolig bob blwyddyn yn y DU. Caiff y rhan fwyaf eu taflu ar ôl y dathlu, gan greu miloedd o dunelli o wastraff. Peidiwch â thaflu'ch coeden gyda'r sbwriel eleni; ailblannwch hi neu ailgylchwch hi - mae'r rhan fwyaf o gynghorau'n cynnig y gwasanaeth hwn a defnyddir y sglodion pren mewn gerddi cyhoeddus er budd i bawb.
- Os ydych yn prynu nwyddau trydanol mawr megis setiau stereo neu deledu, gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn prynu rhai y gellir eu diffodd, nad ydynt yn aros yn y modd disgwyl ('standby mode').
- Os ydych yn anfon cardiau Nadolig gwnewch yn siwr eu bod yn cefnogi elusen fel WWF a'u bod wedi'u hargraffu ar bapur wedi'i ailgylchu. Neu yn well, hyd yn oed, anfonwch gardiau Nadolig electronig i'ch cyfeillion ac aelodau'ch teulu ar y rhyngrwyd ac arbedwch bapur ac adnoddau. Mae'r Post Brenhinol yn dosbarthu tua 150 miliwn o gardiau a pharseli bob dydd yn y cyfnod cyn y Nadolig. Amcangyfrifir y gallai hyd at 1 biliwn o gardiau Nadolig (17 i bob dyn, menyw a phlentyn) ddiweddu mewn biniau ar draws y DU. (Waste Watch)
- Prynwch anrhegion sy'n gwneud gwahaniaeth i'r byd yn ogystal ag unigolion e.e. mabwysiadwch anifail dan berygl gan WWF neu chwiliwch am anrhegion o ddeunyddiau naturiol megis dillad gwely a llieiniau o gotwm organig neu deganau a wnaed â llaw o bren. Prynwch gynhyrchion pren y Cyngor Stiwardiaeth Coedwigoedd (FSC) - o lwyau pren i gadeiriau, mae'r nwyddau hyn wir yn gwneud gwahaniaeth i reolaeth ein coedwigoedd. I gael anrhegion o'r fath ewch i www.wwf.org.uk/shop
- Heriwch eich hun - pa mor wag allwch chi gadw'ch bin? Ystyriwch sut y gallwch leihau maint y gwastraff yr ydych yn ei gynhyrchu gartref ac yn y gwaith. Cofiwch roi anrhegion nad ydych eu heisiau i'ch siop elusen leol yn hytrach na'u taflu - mae'n siwr y bydd rhywun yn eu hoffi!
Pum prif beth i'w hosgoi
- Anrhegion sothach ac addurniadau tila, a gaiff eu defnyddio unwaith ac yna eu taflu. Mae'r cartref cyfartalog yng Nghymru yn taflu 25 kilogram o sbwriel yr wythnos, sef cyfanswm o 1.5 miliwn o dunelli metrig sy'n mynd i safleoedd tirlenwi bob blwyddyn.
- Llysiau sydd allan o dymor e.e. salad a chigoedd wedi'u mewnforio sydd wedi teithio miloedd o filltiroedd mewn awyren cyn cyrraedd y siopau.
- Nwyddau sydd wedi'u pacio mewn deunydd diangen neu ddeunydd cymysg cymhleth a allai ei wneud yn anodd i'w hailgylchu.
- Peidiwch â phrynu teganau a yrrir gan fatris. Ond os oes yn rhaid i chi eu prynu, gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn prynu batris aildrydanadwy - mae batris tafladwy yn broblem gynyddol gan eu bod yn cynnwys cemegolion gwenwynig sy'n beryglus iawn i'r amgylchedd.
- Defnyddiwch bapur lapio yn ddarbodus - a phrynwch bapur wedi'i ailgylchu bob amser. Amcangyfrifir y bydd cymaint ag 83 kilometr sgwâr o bapur lapio yn diweddu mewn biniau sbwriel ar draws y DU dros y Nadolig - mae hynny'n ddigon i orchuddio arwynebedd mwy na Guernsey. (Waste Watch)
Os na all defnyddwyr ddod o hyd i'r hyn maent yn chwilio amdano mewn siopau a bwytai, mae WWF yn eu hannog i ofyn a sicrhau y clywir eu lleisiau. Cymerwch ran, gwnewch wahaniaeth a Nadolig Llawen i chi!
