Climate Change: MP candidates join families

25 April 2005

MP candidates for Cardiff central; Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrats and Gotz Mohindra, Conservatives put climate change under the spotlight of their election campaign.
They joined students and families from around Cardiff to construct a mountain of sand bags in a 'Stop Climate Chaos' event organised by WWF Cymru to demonstrate the impact climate change may bring to people's lives through flooding.

WWF Cymru is calling on the next government to take urgent action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions - the main cause of climate change.

Jenny Willott commented: "The Liberal Democrats welcome WWF's 'Stop Climate Chaos' campaign. The environment needs to be placed at the heart of the next government's policy agenda. The Liberal Democrats would look to do this."

"There's a green thread running though our manifesto. We are committed to reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy supply," she added.

Gotz Mohindra commented: "Climate change is a very important concern and we must think very carefully about our sources of energy and their long- term repercussions," he added.

Morgan Parry, Head of WWF Cymru, said: "WWF considers climate change as the biggest threat to people and wildlife. Severe and freak weather events are already affecting businesses and homes in Wales. Without drastically cutting our carbon dioxide emissions the impact of climate change upon our natural environment could be devastating for future generations."
