Managing Marine Fisheries

4 October 2006
Main Issues
  • The existing regime for England and Wales has been in place for over a hundred years, with the last significant revision of the legislative framework being in the mid-1960's, when fishing methods and conditions were very different.
  • The current organisation of enforcement is complex spanning both domestic requirements and that of the Common Fisheries Policy.
  • The twelve Sea Fisheries Committees (SFCs) were originally established in the 19th Century and , are funded by local authorities, this can lead to competition for scarce resources and under-funding.
  • There is very little enforcement of environmental requirements at present.

WWF Cymru is calling for
  • A further consultation for the fisheries provisions within the Marine Bill (as this was absent for the first consultation).
  • A new legislative framework for inshore fisheries updating Acts which have been on the Statute Book for many years.
  • Revision of the aims and objectives of the Sea Fisheries Committees.
  • Revision of inshore fisheries management more generally to ensure an ecosystem-based approach.
