WWF Cymru's exclusive interviews with politicians
18 April 2007
Which political party has really put the environment at the heart of its manifesto commitments? Are Welsh politicians ready to combat climate change or are they shying away from unpopular policies that will make a difference? WWF Cymru has produced a video newsletter of interviews with party leaders which aims to help inform voters about their environmental policies for the Welsh Assembly's third term.
WWF Cymru has interviewed Carwyn Jones, Wales' Minister for the Environment, Planning and Countryside; Mike German, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats; Nick Bourne, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Ieuan Wyn Jones, Leader of Plaid Cymru. Each was asked the same set of question on their party's commitment to addressing climate change, protecting our seas and coasts in Wales, and sustainable living. Morgan Parry, Head of WWF Cymru said: "WWF Cymru believes the environment needs to be made a key election issue as we are seriously exceeding the capacity of the Earth to support us. This was illustrated in the Living Planet Report which WWF launched last year – it discovered that every person in Wales needs the equivalent of six rugby pitches to sustain our life styles, or in other words we would need three planets to support the world's population if every one lived like us."
Moving our lifestyle onto a more sustainable path in Wales is the driver behind WWF Cymru's work. This can be achieved through reducing our carbon emissions in our homes through switching to a renewable energy source, to buying locally sourced food. The way we lead our lives in Wales has a local and global impact which can be reduced through moving our current three planet lifestyle to that which uses one planet resources.
"A key audience which can help us deliver this is the Welsh Assembly Government. We interviewed party leaders and the environment minister in order to fully inform our readers and supporters of each of their commitments to the environment. We hope they will take into consideration each party's environmental polices when deciding who to vote for on May 3rd" added Morgan Parry.
The interviews with each political party can be read in our online newsletter through clicking here. We also recorded video clips of each party on their environmental policies, which can be accessed through clicking here.
