Go Green in a Fortnight with the Pocket Green Guide for Wales

15 August 2007
In Wales we are using up the world's resources too quickly. And climate change is one of the symptoms of the way we are living beyond the planet's means. In fact if everyone in the world were to consume natural resources and generate carbon dioxide (CO2) at the rate we do in the Wales, we'd need three planets to support us.
But we can all do our bit to conserve resources and combat climate change. If we all consume more wisely, save energy and cut down on our waste we can produce less carbon dioxide, reduce our impact and tread more lightly on the Earth.

This is where the bilingual Pocket Green Guide for Wales comes in. The guide which has been produced in collaboration between Green Guide and WWF Cymru provides bite-sized information that will help people and their families start making a difference today. A key element of the Pocket Green Guide is a 14-day plan that will help readers go green in a fortnight and do their bit to conserve the planet and combat climate change.

"Consumers in Wales increasingly recognise that what they buy has an impact on the environment and as a result they want to do more to tackle global problems such as climate change, species loss and destruction of the world's forests. This guide identifies ways that consumers can reduce their footprint and help move Wales from its current "three planet living" and towards a One Planet Wales," said Morgan Parry, Head of WWF Cymru.

Explaining the importance of small daily changes to a more sustainable lifestyle, Helen Nelson of SustainWales.com said: "Living sustainably means considering every decision we make, from buying ethically to supporting local communities and energy saving, but most importantly it's about taking small steps that make a big difference.

If everyone changed at least one thing, to live in a more eco-friendly way, the number of small changes would add up to make a big difference; and by showing people what they can do is exactly how the Pocket Green Guide can help."

Green lifestyles choices (or 'sustainable lifestyles choices') are becoming increasingly popular. Celebrities leading the scene include Kevin McCloud, Cameron Diaz, Al Gore and Chris Martin and closer to home the Welsh Assembly Government has recently announced that they're planning to ban carrier bags in Wales now they have new law-making powers.

An independent survey commissioned by WWF Cymru to explore Welsh consumer views to buying environmentally friendly gifts it found that women, people living in Mid and West Wales (Powys, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire), and Welsh speakers are the most likely to consider buying environmentally friendly gifts. The least likely are middle aged men with only 38 per cent supporting this idea.

The poll also highlights other major reasons behind Welsh people's support for buying ethical gifts including 86 per cent saying it's because they believe it helps protect the survival of endangered animals and their habitats; 68 per cent because they feel it helps the livelihoods of the producers and 58 per cent because they believe their friends and family think it's more thoughtful.
