Ballymena schoolboy interviews First Minister at World Summit

WWF Northern Ireland Earth Champion, 11 year-old Peter Burton, met with First Minister David Trimble in Johannesburg today as part of the schoolboy's participation in the World Summit on Sustainable Development. Peter, who has already spent a week at the summit representing the views of young people across the UK, met Mr Trimble at Ivory Park, an eco-village and showcase for sustainable housing.
During their meeting, Peter asked the First Minister several questions about Sustainable Development in Northern Ireland. They also toured the Ivory Park eco-village, which derives all its energy from renewable sources such as solar power and incorporates the principles of sustainable building techniques. Commenting on the meeting 11 year-old Peter said: "I really enjoyed meeting First Minister David Trimble and I think our government can learn a lot from what is happening here in Johannesburg. If more sustainable homes were built in Northern Ireland, just like these ones here in Ivory Park, then it would be much better for the environment."

Peter is one of only four youth representatives from across the UK at the summit, who are communicating the views of young people on a global political platform after winning a competition organised by WWF. Commenting on the meeting, Malachy Campbell, Policy Officer for WWF Northern Ireland said: "As a developed country, Northern Ireland has a special responsibility to commit to the principles of sustainable development because our rates of consumption, energy use and pollution can create problems globally. The First Minister's meeting with Peter underlines the importance of involving younger generations in the decision making process as they will be the beneficiaries of the actions taken by world leaders in Johannesburg."
