Ecosystem-based approach

WWF wants to see the ecosystem approach enshrined in legislation in the marine bill.
An ecosystem approach means managing all human activities at sea within one planning framework, based on the best available knowledge about the ecosystem. The government has piloted this approach in the Irish Sea, and many stakeholders including WWF were involved in the project.

This approach is vital if we are to achieve truly sustainable use of our seas, allow development to go ahead, and secure livelihoods in the long term, with a new and integrated planning system which is critical to the future health of UK seas and its wildlife.
