A number of MPA designations have been established in the UK and contribute to international commitments relating to marine biodiversity. In order to assess if these MPAs are fulfilling MPA objectives it is important to evaluate their management effectiveness. This report examines the key issues in relation to the managment effectiveness of MPAs in the UK by considering the potential criteria for evaluating effectiveness; using case studies to apply the criteria, and discussing some of the constraints and barriers to the effectiveness of MPAs in the UK.
