Blair moves on climate change
Thursday 10 February 2005
The Prime Minister has gone on the record as being "absolutely" committed to keeping global temperature rises below 2°C.
WWF has been pressing this key demand of the Stop Climate Chaos Campaign through some 30 senior officials and MPs, including Peter Ainsworth, the influential Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee of MPs. Tony Blair gave the commitment when questioned by Peter at the Liaison Committee meeting on Tuesday.
The 2 degree limit is at the heart of WWF's Campaign because beyond this tipping point, climate change will have a rapidly escalating impact on biodiversity and people's livelihoods worldwide. Accepting this limit has many practical consequences for government decisions, and we are now pressing Ministers with the urgent actions they need to take to make this commitment meaningful.
