Safer chemical future demanded from Prime Minister

Friday 9 September 2005
On Thursday 8 September a group of mothers and children delivered a petition, signed by over 3,000 WWF supporters, to the Prime Minister. The petition asked Tony Blair to ensure that his government leads the EU towards a safer chemical future.
WWF is particularly concerned that later this year EU member state governments will allow hormone disrupting chemicals - the so-called gender-benders - to continue to be available for use in consumer products despite increasing concerns about their potential links to cancers, birth defects and genital abnormalities.

WWF's Chemicals and Health Campaign Leader, Colin Butfield, said "European citizens are looking to their governments to make sure hazardous man-made chemicals are assessed for their safety before they are used in consumer products. The UK government is intending to weaken the current text of the chemical regulation by allowing hormone disrupting chemicals to slip through the net. We hope this petition will persuade the Prime Minister to promote the health of unborn children over the interests of industry profit."
