A Grand Design for One Planet Living

Friday 28 April 2006
WWF, a major sponsor of Grand Designs Live 2006, has unveiled plans for its state-of-the-art 'One Planet Living' feature at this year's event.
The dramatic feature will reflect WWF's 'One Planet Living' philosophy, to help protect the Earth's natural resources. Based on 10 guiding principles, 'One Planet Living' addresses the real and immediate threats to our environment and offers a practical guide to sustainable living.

The 'One Planet Living' feature will consist of a walkthrough 'globe', resembling Earth as viewed from space. Inside, a dazzling 'planet', sculptured from ice, will slowly melt over the duration of the show, representing Earth's ever-dwindling natural resources.

An inspirational short film, produced by Icon Films - an award-winning independent production company, will communicate the concept of One Planet Living. The 6-minute film will form the centrepiece of the feature and will be screened directly over the inside of the globe. It will show that One Planet Living can be easy, affordable and attractive - allowing people everywhere to enjoy a high quality of life, within the natural capacity of the one planet that is home to us all.

WWF is working closely with Grand Designs Live to make this year's exhibition as 'green' as possible. As Grand Designs TV presenter and WWF ambassador Kevin McCloud points out: "sustainability has moved from being a fringe issue to something that touches every aspect of our lives."

Paul King, Director of WWF's One Million Sustainable Homes (OMSH) campaign, said: "We're very excited about being involved in Grand Designs Live 2006. It provides the perfect platform to communicate the concept of One Planet Living to thousands of people. We hope that after experiencing the stunning One Planet Living exhibit, visitors will see that they can adopt the simple principles of this inspirational way of life, and help conserve our planet's resources."
