Wildlife friendly t-shirts from M&S and WWF

Tuesday 16 October 2007
M&S has teamed up with WWF to create a range of truly wild t-shirts for toddlers and young girls that celebrate and help raise funds to conserve the spectacular wildlife on our planet, with M&S donating 10% from the sale of each t-shirt to support WWF's conservation projects around the world.
The collection, which is made from fair-trade cotton, features four charismatic and colourful species found in tropical rainforests - the orang-utan and pygmy elephant from Borneo for toddler girls, and the striking macaw and brilliantly coloured butterflies of the Amazon rainforest for young girls.

These species are amongst those that are currently under threat from deforestation. Borneo's forests have been cleared by loggers at a rate of six football pitches a day and if such rates of deforestation are not reduced, it is predicted that populations of orang-utans could be driven to extinction within the next 50 years. WWF is endeavouring to save forest habitats by working with local people, governments and businesses and supporting initiatives such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC works with forest owners to ensure long-term timber supplies while supporting the wildlife and the future of the people who live and work in the forest.

The t-shirts have been created to encourage children and their parents to celebrate and learn about the spectacular wildlife on our planet. This is the latest activity to come out of the partnership between M&S and WWF. As part of Plan A, the retailer's five year, 100 point eco-plan, M&S is funding WWF's conservation projects in the Heart of Borneo to restore forests. As well as protecting critical habitat for the orang-utan and countless other species, WWF's Heart of Borneo initiative aims to ensure water and food security and poverty alleviation for the people of Borneo. In the long term, it aims to save the island from the ultimate threat of deforestation and increased impacts from droughts and fires.

Stuart Chapman, WWF International Co-ordinator of the Heart of Borneo Programme says: "We need to take action now to ensure the iconic species featured on these t-shirts do not disappear during our children's lifetime. Each of these t-shirts purchased in M&S will help WWF's work to safeguard these species and their habitats for future generations."

The range of four t-shirts will be on sale in M&S stores and online from 16 October.
