Poll results projected onto Edinburgh Castle

Friday 29 April 2005
WWF Scotland released the results of a new poll in spectacular style on Friday night (29 April 2005) by using a high-powered projector to beam selected facts and figures onto Edinburgh Castle and castle rock.
According to the poll , which was carried out by YouGov for WWF's Stop Climate Chaos! Campaign and the LINK 'everyone' campaign , more than 90 per cent of Scots support tougher action to help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The results of the poll show that Scots are increasingly looking for Government to take action to combat greenhouse gas emissions. 85 per cent of those polled would like to see Government putting more money into the development of renewable energy projects such as wind farms, while over 90 per cent would like to see new laws introduced to ensure public housing meets energy efficiency targets.

The poll also highlights increasing concern, and a sense of urgency, among the Scottish public, with 71 per cent of those polled expressing worry about changing weather patterns, and almost half of those polled believing that climate change will cause serious problems in their lifetime.

Dr Richard Dixon, Head of Policy for WWF Scotland, said: "This poll clearly shows that the public support much stronger action to tackle climate change. Politicians have been guilty of a lot of rhetoric on climate change and very little action so far. It is vital that the next Government, makes the right decisions, and takes real action, over the next parliamentary term."

"This poll gives would-be politicians a strong mandate to make the tough decisions needed to reduce pollution from industry, housing and transport, and to deal with the negative effects of climate change. Ignoring this issue is not an option. Climate change is becoming an important issue and it will certainly influence some voters. Scotland's political parties should take heed."
Everyone Campaign

WWF Scotland is working with the rest of Scotland's environment and conservation groups through the 'everyone' campaign to make sure that climate change is an issue during the General Election campaign.

The poll of 2,000 people across the UK was carried out for WWF by YouGov between 15 and 18 March.
