Road toll removal
Monday 11 February 2008
Bad for the environment
Commenting on the scrapping of tolls on the Forth and Tay road bridges Dr Dan Barlow, Acting Director of WWF Scotland, said:
"On economic, social and environmental grounds there is simply no justification for scrapping these tolls. The extra road traffic that will be generated will cost the Scottish economy, increase local pollution and push up climate change emissions."
"The transport sector makes up a major part of Scotland's climate emissions and are rising. The Scottish Government's recently launched climate consultation acknowledges the urgent need to curb climate emissions. Sadly, their decision to axe road tolls simply makes the job of tackling climate emissions that much harder."
The Government's own Toll Impact Study (published Aug 07) revealed that climate emissions would rise:
"The base version of TMfS forecasts a total of around 9,000 tonnes of additional CO2 pa to be emitted following removal of the tolls. This includes an increase around 14,000 tonnes of CO2 pa from traffic travelling through/in and around (and around 2,000 tonnes in Dundee), but a reduction of around 11,700 tonnes pa traffic travelling through Perthshire & Kinross. This trend highlights the change route choice between the M90 and the A91/A92 once the tolls are removed."
