Green light for M74 extension could lead to carbon pile-up
Thursday 14 February 2008
Government gives go-ahead to road extension
Commenting on the Scottish Government's decision to give the go-ahead to a £450million extension of the M74 in Glasgow, Dr. Dan Barlow, Acting Director of WWF Scotland said:
"We are deeply disappointed with the decision to proceed with this pollution-generating motorway scheme. At a time when we really need to see concerted and joined up action by Government to reduce our climate emissions, the last thing we need is yet another road-building project. Just imagine what amazing things could have been achieved if this £450 million had instead been ploughed into public transport and schemes to reduce the need to drive.
"The transport sector makes up a major part of Scotland's climate emissions and these are rising. The Scottish Government's recently-launched climate consultation acknowledges the urgent need for Scotland to cut emissions by 80% by 2050. Sadly, their decision to give their blessing to this motorway scheme simply makes the job of tackling climate change that much more challenging."
