People of Scotland can be Bravehearts on climate change

Wednesday 5 March 2008
Stirling is third stop on WWF Scotland's seven cities tour of Scotland.
The people of Stirling are being urged to make their voices heard on climate change on Saturday 8th March by signing up for a strong Scottish Climate Change Bill, when WWF Scotland visits the city as part of its nationwide campaign on climate change this weekend.

The environmental charity continues its colourful campaign to get as many people as possible to back a strong Scottish bill in Stirling tomorrow, as Scotland has the chance to put in place world-leading climate legislation.

And the WWF team, including Acting Director Dr Dan Barlow, will be visited by Stirling MSP and Minister for the Scottish Parliament, Bruce Crawford.

Mr Crawford, SNP MSP for Stirling commented:
"I am delighted to support the Stirling campaign for a Scottish Climate Change bill. It is essential that we take action now to protect our environment and ensure that we act responsibly and take the measures necessary for the benefit of future generations. A strong Climate Change Bill will deliver this, and I encourage the people of Stirling and Scotland to show their support for these proposals."

WWF will have a colourful stall in the pedestrian area in Murray Place, in the city centre, from 10-4pm and will be joined by a polar bear character, to encourage people to support a strong Scottish Climate Change Bill and give away free energy-saving light bulbs.

Government proposals on a Climate Change Bill are currently out for consultation. Saturday's stall is one of 25 planned events being staged across Scotland by WWF, where members of the public are asked to demonstrate their support for Government and Parliament to deliver a strong Climate Change Bill by signing postcards in support.

WWF Scotland's nationwide campaign appealing for signatures from now until the end of April will involve a seven cities tour of Scotland, as well as visiting farmers' markets and other events up and down the country.

Dr. Dan Barlow, WWF Scotland's Acting Director said:
"Climate change is the biggest threat we face, and this bill may be the most important piece of legislation we will see in our lifetime. Scotland is fantastically well-placed to demonstrate global leadership in tackling climate change and this Saturday the people of Stirling have a terrific opportunity to make a difference. I'm really looking forward to attending this event and talking to the people of Stirling so come along and speak to our staff and polar bear character, collect a free energy-saving light bulb and sign-up to show your support for a strong climate change bill."
