Tackling climate change: give it a go in Glasgow
Wednesday 12 March 2008
WWF visits the dear green place for the latest city event in its nationwide climate change campaign.
The people of Glasgow will have the chance to send Government a message on climate change this Saturday (15th March) by signing up for a strong Climate Change Bill, when WWF Scotland visits the city as part of its nationwide campaign on climate change.
Environmental group WWF will have a colourful stall in the heart of the city centre, by the Donald Dewar statue in Buchanan Street, from 10-4pm and will be joined by a polar bear character, to encourage people to support a strong Scottish Climate Change Bill and give away free energy-saving light bulbs.
Scottish Government proposals on a Climate Change Bill are currently out for consultation. Saturday's stall is one of 25 planned events being staged across Scotland by WWF, where members of the public are asked to demonstrate their support for Government and Parliament to deliver a strong Climate Change Bill by signing postcards in support.
And Glasgow MSP Patrick Harvie will be visiting the stall to lend his support. Backing the campaign, the Green MSP commented:
"I'm delighted to welcome WWF's campaigners to Glasgow, and I hope that thousands of Glaswegians will join the call for a strong climate change bill.
"Climate change requires nothing less than the transformation of our society and economy - an overhaul for the 21st century. But there are far more opportunities than threats from this change and it's important that the Scottish Government hears that message loud and clear."
WWF Scotland's nationwide campaign appealing for signatures from now until the end of April will involve a seven cities tour of Scotland, as well as visiting farmers' markets and other events up and down the country.
Dr. Dan Barlow, WWF Scotland's Acting Director said:
"This bill may be the most important piece of legislation we will see in our lifetime. As a nation, Scotland can lead the way on tackling climate change – the biggest threat we all face. This Saturday WWF will be in Scotland's biggest city to talk to people about climate change and the terrific opportunity they have to make a difference.
"At our Edinburgh event we got twice the number of people signing postcards that we expected. There's a healthy rivalry between our two biggest cities, so the challenge is there for Glaswegians to send an even stronger message that they want action on climate change. So come along and speak to our staff and polar bear character, collect a free energy-saving light bulb and sign-up to show your support for a strong Climate Change Bill. I'm sure the 'Dear Green Place' can live up to its name!"
