Labour urged to help put Scotland on path to tackling climate change

Friday 28 March 2008
Scottish Labour will be urged to help Scotland become a world-leader by backing a strong Scottish Climate Bill at a fringe event at the party's spring conference in Aviemore.
In the session entitled "Tackling Climate Change: Scotland's Chance to Lead Change," speakers from WWF Scotland and UNISONScotland will discuss with Scottish Labour members the terrific opportunity that currently exists for Scotland to lead the world with strong climate legislation presented by the Scottish Climate Change Bill, proposals for which are currently out for consultation.

If politicians put into statute the measures called for by WWF Scotland, UNISONScotland and the rest of the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition, then the Bill would help put Scotland on a path to steady emissions reductions.

The event will be chaired by Sarah Boyack MSP, Labour's environment spokesperson and the speakers will be Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland, Kirstie Shirra, Head of Campaigns at World Development Movement (WDM) Scotland and Dave Watson, UNISONScotland Organiser and Vice Chair of the Scottish Labour Party.

Sarah Boyack, Scottish Labour, stated:

"I am very much looking forward to chairing what will no doubt be a very interesting and informative event hosted by WWF Scotland and UNISONScotland. The challenge for the new Scottish Government is to go beyond talking a good game on climate change and to put in place the radical changes in policy and financial investment to make sure Scotland delivers on climate change. In the Scottish Parliament Labour will continue to argue for stronger action on climate change. "

Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland said:

"I'm delighted to be speaking at this event at the Scottish Labour Party's Spring Conference, which coincides with WWF's campaign for a strong climate bill. Top of Scottish Labour's agenda must be creating a vision of Scotland that is bold in its response to the challenge of climate change. With the right amount of political will, Scotland could be a global leader in demonstrating how a strong and sustainable economy, as well as a fair and just society, can be built around tackling climate change. This is one issue on which Scotland can indeed "walk taller."

Dave Watson, UNISONScotland commented:

"As the party of working people, Labour has a great opportunity to promote a strong bill that promotes negotiated green workplace agreements, and ensures the public sector is given a much greater prominence than currently features in the bill.

"More CO2 emissions are generated in the workplace than the home. Public services have a vital role to play and the bill should ensure that the public sector leads by example."

Kirstie Shirra of WDM said:

"This bill is essential not just for Scotland but for all people globally. It is the world's poorest who are suffering most, yet countries like our own are responsible. It is great that the Labour Party is discussing this issue and essential that they support the measures of Stop Climate Chaos to bring an end to this climate injustice."
