UK Government sparks green energy revolution?

Thursday 26 June 2008
The Government's renewable energy strategy could herald a much-needed renewable energy revolution and incentivise UK home owners to go green.
Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland said:

"Scotland and the UK could lead the world on climate change and clean energy if it chose to. The proposals set out by the UK Government, if implemented, could help kick-start a much-needed green energy revolution. Boosting the use of renewable energy and a step change in energy efficiency measures could significantly reduce our climate emissions, create jobs and reduce our exposure to soaring fossil fuel prices. However, if this vision is to be achieved then no more time and money should be wasted trying to breathe life into polluting and expensive nuclear power.

"We welcome plans to make renewable energy more attractive for homeowners by developing feed-in tariffs, but these must go hand in hand with really ambitious energy efficiency measures. Likewise, we believe this is a much greater role to be played by green energy sources such as wave power, especially here in Scotland."

WWF has been campaigning for a strong set of policies to reduce the environmental footprint of our existing homes. WWF's How Low? Report, released earlier this year, concludes that it is feasible for the UK to meet CO2 emission reduction targets of 80 per cent in the domestic housing sector by 2050.

WWF welcomes the use of feed-in tariffs, which enable individuals to generate their own electricity through renewable sources and sell any excess back to the National Grid at a profit, and calls on the Government to accept amendments to the Energy Bill as a way of introducing them.
