WWF protests against dirty oil
25 February 2009
Today, WWF and the Co-operative Financial Services protested outside Canada House against the country's continued exploitation and promotion of the dirty fuel, tar sands − one of the most environmentally-destructive ways of producing oil.
While our campaigners demonstrated outside, delegates from both organisations met the High Commissioner, handing him a letter of protest and explaining why oil production from tar sands must not be expanded.
Exploitation of tar sands is destroying pristine boreal (northerly coniferous) forest, impacting on local wildlife and communities and resulting in high levels of carbon emissions that significantly add to the growing menace of global climate change.
“WWF is determined to put a stop to the expansion of this dirty fuel,” said WWF Head of Campaigns, Colin Butfield. “In a crucial year for tackling climate change with the forthcoming UN conference in December, it’s important that countries such as Canada take responsibility for their actions.”
