Working with RSA on new risks in a changing world

17 November 2009

We’ve just announced a three-year partnership with leading international insurance group RSA. The focus of the partnership will be how the world’s changing climate presents new insurance risks. RSA will also support some of our big conservation projects around the world, while working with us to become a more sustainable business.

The world’s changing environment presents a new set of risks. The insurance industry is able to help customers understand the level of risk they face, underwrite that risk to give security and respond when the worst happens.

Some key elements of the WWF/RSA partnership:

  • RSA will support WWF’s major ‘Arctic risks’ exhibition during the global climate talks in Copenhagen this December
  • in the UK we’ll work together on flood protection projects in east London, including further exploration of how flood protection should be considered in property design and location
  • as one of the world’s largest marine insurers, RSA will sponsor research and mapping of sensitive ocean areas – including around the Arctic, where climate change is opening up new areas to commercial shipping, fishing and resource extraction. We’ll look at reducing risks and using resources more sustainably
  • in China – where the government recognises the environmental challenges of rapid economic growth and has committed to stretch its renewable energy targets – our partnership will explore the role insurance can play in supporting transition to a low-carbon economy
  • in the long term the partnership will be looking at incentives for RSA customers to reduce their environmental footprint (making their homes more energy and water-efficient).
  • with WWF’s support, RSA will set new CO2 targets, develop new green products and investigate sustainable investments.

WWF CEO David Nussbaum says: “We look forward to the partnership driving low-carbon investments in the financial sector, low-carbon behaviour among customers and a greater ability among businesses and homeowners to protect themselves against the increasing impacts from climate change.”

Commenting on the partnership, Andy Haste, Group CEO at RSA says: “Behaving responsibly and ethically in the way we manage our business can have a positive impact on the environment, people and the communities in which we operate.

“WWF is one of the world’s leading environmental organisations. They work in nearly all of our markets and they’re one of the most recognised global brands.

“During the course of this partnership we’ll be helping and learning from each other to understand more about environmental risks, to protect our business and customers while minimising the impact on the environment.”
