Welsh Assembly unites on tough climate pledge

19 November 2009

Following a debate in the National Assembly for Wales on 18 November, there was a unanimous vote by all political parties to sign up collectively to Wales reaching a 40% cut in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

The National Assembly for Wales is once again ‘world leading’ in its ambition on climate change.

After a debate led by the Welsh Liberal Democrats, an unprecedented cross-party agreement saw the Welsh Labour/Plaid coalition government stand shoulder to shoulder with the Welsh Liberal Democrats and Welsh Conservatives to send a message internationally – that climate change is being de-politicised in Wales, and Wales is prepared to deliver what is required for the sake of our future on this planet.

The motion they agreed on “Calls on the Welsh Assembly Government, through its Climate Change Strategy, to reduce emissions by 40% by 2020, against the 1990 baseline, and to encourage other governments to do the same.”

The commitment comes just 18 days before the Copenhagen summit, where there’s still a great chance for world leaders to agree on a legally binding and ambitious climate deal.

Head of WWF Cymru, Anne Meikle, says:

“We warmly welcome the genuine cross-party consensus reached here and we offer it our unequivocal support. With this decision our politicians can begin to work together with continuity – exactly what’s needed if the world is to overcome climate change.

“This sends a powerful message internationally that Wales will stand up and be counted with the other industrialised and developing nations that support the 40% target, for a fair and effective global deal.”
