What's happening @ the Senedd

Assembly News
The winter of climate change
Over the next three months the Senedd is packed with opportunities to determine Wales' response to climate change– either how we prevent further dangerous climate change by reducing our emissions or how we adapt to the climatic change that is already taking place. We know that we have a very short window for action if we are to stay below a global average temperature rise of 2°C; 2007 will be a critical year for Wales and we will have to see some strong decision making.

WAG cross-sector climate change group
Before Christmas, WWF Cymru was invited to sit on the Welsh Assembly Government Climate Change Cross-Sector Steering Group, whose role will be key in ensuring that all sectors across Wales work together to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

Planning and climate change
Environment Minister Carwyn Jones has launched a Planning for Climate Change consultation document recognising the key role that planning plays in minimising and adapting to the effects of climate change.

Indeed, without radical changes to the way we plan our communities we will not be able to achieve sufficient reduction in emissions from transport – the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions in the UK. The consultation includes a draft statement to which WWF Cymru will respond by 30 March.

Energy White Paper, Climate Change Bill and Energy Route Map
The UK government is due to publish an Energy White Paper and the long-awaited Climate Change Bill in March. These will set out a framework for the UK to make cuts in carbon emissions. We expect the launch of the Welsh Energy Route Map to be launched in conjunction with them.

We are working with Wales Environment Link to update the route map to take account of the major developments since the draft was published in 2005. We expect it to set out the vision for the future of energy in Wales.

WWF Cymru wants to see climate change mitigation at the heart of the route map, and a clear path identified to reduce our emissions by 60 per cent by 2050 in line with the UK government target. We have also asked that the route map support a carbon budget to enable Wales to deliver an immediate and sustained decline in greenhouse gas emissions by an average of at least 3 per cent a year. We will be repeating this call as part of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, and as part of the election campaign.
