Design a bag competition winners

20 July 2009

Plastics have only been around since the 1950s. Now they seem to be everywhere – from shopping bags and food wrapping to toothbrushes and make-up containers.

And plastic doesn't go away. The average plastic shopping bag is used for about 18 minutes, but could take hundreds of years to break down.

Plastic waste accounts for 80% of all marine litter, causing the deaths of at least one million seabirds and about 100,000 seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins and sea turtles every year.

The Throw Away section of WWF’s One Planet Challenge asked Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to think about the amount of waste packaging we generate and what ‘throw away’ actually means.

Girls were asked to design a ‘bag for life’ which they would be happy to use instead of plastic bags.  The competition was extremely popular and we had many sacks filled with entries on judging day.

We are very proud to announce the winners as:

Anna McErlean, 93rd Belfast Brownies (Leader Vicki Thompson) for her design of animals, which the judges loved, in the under 12 category.

Danniella Wilkinson
, 3rd Garforth Guide Unit (Leader  Gillian Ainsley) for her message design in the over 12 category.

And a special award to Abigail Strodder, 7th Mirfield Guides (Leader Val Dickinson) for her panda design, which was the office favourite.

All the entries were of a very high standard and picking winners was extremely difficult.  (As entries were very low in the over 20s category, a winner could not be found.)
