• Threats: Overfishing

Overfishing has devastating effects on our marine environment.

Seventy-five per cent of our global fisheries are already being over-exploited. A third of all species have declined since 1970. Despite this, fishing fleets are expanding and technology makes finding and catching fish ever more efficient. It is not just fish either. Every year whales, turtles and seabirds are killed on a massive scale as a result of accidental collision, entanglement in fishing gear and pollution.

"...it's certainly about sustainable communities; I think it's cultural - it's almost artistic. I don't think there's any aspect of our daily lives that one planet living doesn't touch."
