Carbon neutrality

Carbon neutrality

In June 2006, the WWF Charter Group endorsed the proposal that the whole WWF Network should use the same method of calculating and offsetting carbon emissions.

By using a common system, we can ensure that as a Network we are handling the issue in the same way, that the calculation and offset mechanisms are credible and the best available, and that we can accumulate data and report progress on a Network-wide basis.

The WWF Climate Change Programme has recommended that WWF should use the services of Climatefriendly, a carbon offset company based in Australia. We have worked closely with Climatefriendly in helping them to set up an appropriate scheme to measure the Network's emissions.

This is the second year that WWF-UK has offset carbon emissions by purchasing Gold Standard offsets. This is in line with the Network Standard from the WWF International Secretariat and our own Management Team's decision.

However, we still believe that before seeking 'carbon neutrality' by buying offsets we should continue to strive to reduce our carbon emissions to the irreducible minimum.

The activities detailed throughout this Environmental Report show our commitment and resolve to achieve this.

Performance against FY07 target

  1. To further reduce our CO2 emissions to the irreducible minimum. This was achieved, with an overall reduction of 22% - from 800 tonnes to 559 tonnes.

Targets for FY08

  1. To further reduce, by 10%, our carbon emissions from all activities.
  2. To offset all FY08 emissions in a Gold Standard offset scheme.
