Transport
We maintained our focus on reducing CO2 emissions generated by our business travel to the minimum possible.
WWF-UK performed well against this overall target this year - not least through the simple measure of requiring prior written approval from line management for all travel over 200 miles, to ensure that all journeys are justified.
We generated 399 tonnes of CO2 from all forms of travel, a full 10% reduction on the previous year's results.
This year saw a number of refinements in the way we measure travel. The overall picture is that although the figures for air travel were disappointing due to exceptional circumstances, we are ahead of our long-term target of reducing CO2 from travel by 25% by 2010 from the benchmark figure set in 2004.
Rail travel seems to have become the preferred mode of transport even though the overall distance travelled is slightly down.
It is now possible for us to more accurately measure our road travel and there has been a significant reduction in this mode of transport.
Performance against FY07 targets
- Introduce collaborative working to reduce the need to travel for meetings: made progress by the introduction of web-based conferencing.
- Maintain progress towards our 2010 target of reducing CO2 emissions by imposing a 5% reduction target against FY06 figures. This target was achieved with an overall figure of 399 tonnes, although our air travel increased to 306 tonnes from 286 tonnes last year.
- Monitor and report more accurately on road travel. This was achieved.
Targets for FY08
- Maintain the focus on air travel, with the objective of a further 5% reduction from last year's target of 292 tonnes.
- The overall travel emissions target remains consistent with previous years' targets at 422 tonnes.
- Encourage even greater use of trains for journeys within Europe.
