Save the cerrado campaign update
A year ago we set out on a task that we felt was crucial to protecting keys areas of biodiversity around the world; read our update for the latest news on our campaign asking UK supermarkets to source soya that doesn't cause deforestation.
We feel that we’ve come a long way in a short time – we’ve raised public awareness of the issues and after working both publically and privately with the supermarkets, all have become more actively engaged in the issue - but as ever there’s a long way to go. While a number of the supermarkets have given general commitments to sustainable soya (see table) they don’t yet say how they are going to fulfil them. Only Waitrose has done this through its commitment to buying 100% RTRS by 2015. Right now we need the other supermarkets to show they support credible standards for soya production and commit to buying 100% RTRS by 2015. It’s crucial that weak standards are not supported. We believe that RTRS should be the baseline standard for soya globally with an associated process of continuous improvement.
