Progress so far on Heathrow

WWF is actively involved in challenging the proposed new third runway at Heathrow. The decision has now become highly political and a decision is expected in January 2009.

Last February, many of you responded to our call to action and signed the Stop Heathrow Expansion petition.

And the pressure is mounting:

  • there were over 70,000 responses to the Heathrow consultation, most of which were negative
  • the Conservative party, the Liberal Democrat party, the London Mayor, the Greater London Authority, and many MPs from all parties have all pledged their opposition
  • there have been a series of high-profile rallies – one at Heathrow, attended by 3,000 people including WWF supporters, and another outside the Houses of Parliament. These have helped draw the attention of the press and capture the public imagination.

Over 100 MPs (including 49 from the Labour party) have already signed a petition (called an Early Day Motion) criticising the flawed consultation and calling for a full investigation into the potential for a new high-speed rail network to replace short-haul flights.

If we can encourage even more MPs to back the petition, it will become increasingly difficult for the government to ignore the many voices opposed to expansion.
