Homes success

Grand Designs Great British Refurb campaign

WWF has been campaigning to green the UK’s homes for many years, and our Grand Designs Great British Refurb campaign has had some great success recently.

8,000 of you signed our petition to Gordon Brown in summer 2009 calling on the government to do more to help people in the UK improve their homes’ energy efficiency. Then in December 2009 the government announced the launch of a new scheme to make it easier for homeowners to carry out green refurbishments – a great first step towards our goals!

As part of our petition hand-in we asked MPs to come and help Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud insulate our specially constructed model house outside Parliament. All the major political parties showed up to support the campaign, which really shows our message is getting through!

In October 2009 we retrofitted WWF supporter Rebecca Williams’ home in Manchester to show how people can take simple steps to make a real difference to their energy use and bills. Our video of the retrofit was shown at the Conservative party conference, where Kevin McCloud spoke about the campaign – this gave us a really valuable opportunity to influence Conservative housing policy.

We’ll be taking the campaign onwards and upwards in the months to come – keep up to date and support us at www.greatbritishrefurb.co.uk
