Reporting carbon emissions

If we want to live in a cleaner, greener world, large companies need to disclose their carbon emissions.

Currently companies have to disclose their finances each year. This helps investors to make informed decisions about which companies are the best to invest in. But there are some costs that are not accounted for – and carbon pollution is the main one.

Companies emit millions of tonnes of carbon each year, and there’s little or no cost to them for this pollution. Our climate is changing, and this will affect all life on Earth. We need to measure carbon pollution in order to manage our affect on the climate.

Times they are a changing

The cost of carbon pollution is increasing and governments are bringing in legislation to penalise polluting companies. But there’s no way for investors to know which companies present the greatest risks.

We’re calling on the UK government to introduce legislation – called Mandatory Carbon Disclosure – that will make it compulsory for large companies to state how much carbon they emit.

This will make it easier for investors to compare their investment risks. We believe it will also draw investors to low-carbon companies, helping drive us towards a much-needed greener global economy.

The campaign in 2012

Our campaign has shown that the cost of carbon pollution is increasing and governments around the world are bringing in legislation to penalise polluting companies. But currently there’s no way for investors to know which companies present the greatest risks. Investors need clear, accurate information so they can make the right decisions about where to put their money.

We’re calling on the UK government to introduce legislation – called Mandatory Carbon Reporting – that will make it compulsory for large companies to state how much carbon they emit.

Our campaign has shown that it would be a benefit to the UK and businesses based here.

Through campaign actions that resulted in thousands of letters you have helped us show that the public want Mandatory Carbon Reporting introduced. Through the Early Day Motion 799 MPs have shown that they want this legislation introduced. And we’ve helped mobilise hundreds of companies and organisations to show their support for our calls for this legislation too. The support is overwhelming. This is the right thing to do.

Now it is for the government to introduce the legislation before the deadline, set out in the Climate Change Act 2008, of 6th April 2012.

We believe it will help drive us towards a much-needed greener global economy.
