A big win for the climate

Posted by Anthony Field on 07/10/11 13:12 PM

After 18 months of campaigning with The Co-operative and other organisations in a European coalition we have had a victory.

If adopted the current proposal for the EU Fuel Quality Directive will set minimum environmental standards for a range of fuels, including tar sands, coal converted to liquid and oil from shale rock

This proposal is critical: if we are to effectively tackle climate change, we must reduce the carbon footprint of fossil fuels, and increase investment in renewables.

However we have not won this yet. The proposal is a major step in the right direction but it is only a proposal. The next stage is for the Transport Ministers from across Europe to vote on it. We expect this will happen before December.
