Don't support the tar sands
Tar sands are bad news in the fight against climate change. We’re horrified by what’s happening in Canada, and we want oil companies and their investors to pull out of these dirty and unsustainable developments. Here’s a great opportunity to add your voice to the mounting pressure...
If you have a pension, chances are your money is being invested in major energy companies like BP and Shell. Both of these oil giants are involved in the dirty and climate-threatening exploitation of tar sands in Canada.
WWF is supporting the FairPensions’ campaign, to get pension companies to force a review of tar sands developments.
All fossil fuels are a worry – because the carbon released adds to global warming – but extracting oil from tar sands takes so much more energy, and on average produces three times more greenhouse gases.
It also creates large-scale pollution, deforestation and wildlife disturbances, and threatens the wellbeing of indigenous communities.
What’s more, industry analysts increasingly question whether oil (and specifically this kind of ‘hard to get’ oil) will remain profitable at all in the face of unstable oil prices , rising carbon emission taxes and much more efficient or electric powered cars.
What you can do
In the next few weeks, shareholders in Shell will vote on a resolution regarding tar sands. You have a unique opportunity to influence their vote, and add your voice to thousands of others.
Some major investors are already expressing concerns, but we also need you to use the power of your pension to force a review of this damaging and risky activity.
Previous campaign successes have proved that contacting investors really can change corporate behaviour.
You can contact your pension provider directly, or (if you don't have one) send a message to one of Shell's largest shareholders.
All you’ll need is the name of your pension scheme and one minute to take action
