FSC – good for forests, good for people

Teacher Adekon Sebastien and her daughter Marie Segolene inside the school building in Malene village, East province, Cameroon

Pallisco is an FSC-certified logging company in Cameroon, west central Africa. Meeting the high environmental and social standards of FSC certification means Pallisco selectively harvests just one section of forest each year, which is then left to regenerate for 30 years.

Large sections of forest are protected and will never be cut down, and they work with environmental groups to identify where chimpanzees live in order to avoid logging those areas and minimise disturbance.

The workers also have better working and living conditions. Pallisco has helped reduce local unemployment, provides free medical care for its workers and has helped set up a school in the local village of Malene. Adekon Sebastien is a teacher at the school:

“Our new school has meant positive changes for the village. The children used to have to walk 3km to get to school every day, now they can all attend school right in their own village.”
