Why we campaign

Living as if there were three planets

Nobody gets up in the morning and decides to contribute to climate change, help cut down a tropical rainforest, or deprive people in other parts of the world of a decent standard of living. Yet, our apparently innocent daily decisions all too often have these invisible consequences.

Indeed, if every one in the world lived as we do in the UK we’d need three planets to support us – to put it simply we’re consuming our way towards dangerous climate change, conflicts over resources and the loss of the natural world.

Our One Planet Future vision

But it doesn’t have to be this way. WWF has a vision a One Planet Future – where people and nature live in harmony, thriving within their fair share of the planet’s natural resources.

We still have a window of opportunity – albeit a very small one – to implement policies that not only tackle our planetary crisis but also improve our lives for the better. If we can create a world where we don’t have to sit in traffic jams to get to work, where our food is fresh and natural, where our homes are efficient and cheap to power, and where we can enjoy the natural world around us, we will also be tackling many of the causes of climate change and biodiversity loss.

It is this, profoundly positive, realisation that forms the foundations of WWF’s One Planet Future vision, and it is our campaigns that seek to make it a reality.

Campaigning for a One Planet Future

It’s important for all of us to make changes to our lifestyles, and WWF’s Ecological Footprint calculator can help guide these choices. But bigger picture changes are also needed if we are to achieve a way of life that uses no more than the resources of our one planet.

WWF is therefore ratcheting up the pressure on government and industry to implement system changes in those sectors – housing, transport, energy and food – that have the biggest impact. If significant wins can be made in these areas, we really do have a chance of a One Planet Future.

Some of the changes will be easy, others more difficult. Some require just waking up in the morning and deciding to do it. Others will involve adding your voice to others, demanding that governments introduce environmentally-friendly policies and encourage businesses to ensure that their products and practices allow us to lead better-quality lives.

We have been born into a decisive moment in history and it is an extraordinary privilege to know that our choices will make a big difference to the people and wildlife that will share this planet’s future. We should make the most of it.
