One Planet Mobility
One Planet Mobility: a framework for change
On a global scale, personal mobility is now responsible for 26% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
In Europe, mobility has the fastest growing energy demands of all sectors and is the only sector with consistently increasing CO2 emissions in most countries.
So far, solutions to reduce the energy we need for transport have focused on incremental steps, such as improving the efficiency of our cars.
But any efficiency gains have been outstripped by the growth in demand for transport.
The challenge
Our challenge is to find systemic ways to address the challenge of mobility in the 21st century – this means working with the wider system – not just how we get to far-away places with greater efficiency.
WWF's One Planet Mobility (OPM) programme was designed to address this challenge.
During 2007 and early 2008, OPM brought together more than 30 European organisations from business, government and civil society to create collaborative solutions for sustainable mobility.
One Planet Mobility report
The outcomes of this process and the insights it generated are set out in WWF's new report One Planet Mobility: A journey towards a sustainable future.
The report takes a systemic approach to understanding the impacts, trends and drivers of personal mobility. Drawing on this understanding, it shows how many mainstream solutions for sustainable mobility do not tackle the fundamental drivers of environmental degradation and the social impacts of ever increasing mobility.
The report presents an alternative approach for developing solutions: an innovative step-by-step framework for system-wide change towards sustainable personal mobility.
It concludes by describing the alternative practical project ideas that resulted from One Planet Mobility on tackling unsustainable mobility patterns.
One Planet Mobility report launch
The report will be publicly launched at an interactive event where leading actors from the transport sector, government and civil society will map out ways to achieve a sustainable future for mobility.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge insights set out in the report. They will also explore future business models, policy direction and funding for innovation in the context of the project ideas that emerged from the OPM process.
