How we work

With our expertise in protecting freshwater habitats and species , we’re well placed to work with governments and business to make sure water resources are used and managed wisely.

Working with government

Keeping rivers, lakes and wetlands flowing naturally is critical if we want to maintain healthy, functioning ecosystems and all the services they provide. We work with governments and river basin organisations to make this happen. We also promote sustainable dams, pressing to ensure only the right dams are built in the right places.

Working with business

As water resources become increasingly scarce, companies are starting to wake up to the risks this poses to them. We encourage private sector companies not only to reduce their impacts on freshwater ecosystems, but also to get actively involved in improving water management in the river basins where they work.

Freshwater habitats and species

We’re committed to protecting freshwater environments and wildlife, whether it’s water voles in the UK or giant catfish in the Mekong. Wetlands are home to some of the richest biodiversity on Earth, and we support our partners to protect and manage these spectacular habitats wisely.
