Unilever – creating the Marine Stewardship Council

Unilever is one of the world's biggest consumers of fish, and in cooperation with WWF it founded the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 1996. Modelled on the Forest Stewardship Council, the MSC certifies fisheries as sustainable and well-managed, as part of a plan to reverse the worldwide crisis in fish stocks.

Sainsbury's – which sells more than £220 million of seafood a year – was the first UK retailer to offer MSC-certified products.
