Recycling your old phone and raising cash for conservation
WWF is delighted to be the beneficiary of Vodafone's charity handset recycling scheme - it’s one of the biggest in the UK and over the years has raised millions of pounds for good causes. All models and manufacturers from any network are welcome and Vodafone will donate the value of the phone to WWF.
Through our partnership we are working together to raise awareness of the importance of recycling for the environment. We'll continue to tell people about the positive impacts of their support, for example by highlighting success stories from our conservation projects around the world which are benefiting from the funds raised.
Handsets can be recycled by dropping them off at Vodafone stores across the UK or by posting them to ‘Freepost, Vodafone Recycling’.
What we're doing
Through our partnership, WWF and Vodafone are:
Encouraging phone users to recycle their old handsets to protect the environment - recycling prevents potentially harmful electronic waste ending up in landfill, in line with EU regulations on electronic waste. Vodafone’s policy of 'no landfill' means that the phones are refurbished and reused, or broken down for other manufacturing.
Generating vital funds to support WWF’s environmental work across the world –Vodafone staff have already voted for £100,000 of the funds raised in 2011 to go towards a project to help the Sepik people in New Guinea develop sustainable livelihoods while protecting their forests from growing threats such as illegal logging and mining.
Why we're doing it
Mike Durbridge, head of direct channels at Vodafone UK, says: “We have an ongoing commitment to encourage recycling of old phones instead of letting them gather dust. We’ll take any phone from any network or manufacturer to help WWF-UK’s global conservation work.”
