WarmGuard

WarmGuard Ltd, a leading supplier of gas boiler and central heating insurance policies to households within the UK, has joined with WWF in a partnership to fund new research on Adélie penguins in Antarctica.

What we're doing

WarmGuard is donating £30,000 to WWF to fund new research into the conservation of Adélies and their habitats. The research project will focus on the foraging behaviour of Adélies in the South Orkney Islands, and will also help advance our scientific understanding of Antarctica, and the impact of climate change on Adélies.  It will be carried out by a small team of British scientists based on Signy Island, where long-term penguin research is already under way.

Why we're doing it

Although there are an estimated 5 million Adélie penguins in the wild, parts of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean are warming rapidly.  These rising temperatures are causing the sea ice to melt, which in turn is changing the habitat that Adélies depend on and threatening their survival. Populations are already declining along the Antarctica Peninsula and in the South Orkney Islands. This critically important project is assessing the impact of climate change on this ice-dependent species.

John Colinswood, managing director of WarmGuard, says:  "WarmGuard is committed to protecting the future of the Adélie penguins. We're all responsible for the protection and future of our planet and its many species, and as a socially responsible business WarmGuard is delighted to provide the much-needed funding for this research work.”

Tobin Aldrich, director of fundraising at WWF-UK,  says: “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with WarmGuard and absolutely delighted with the £30,000 that WarmGuard is giving us.  This is enabling us to carry out new and vital research into Adélie penguins in the new Marine Protected Area in Antarctica.”
