The art club at Avondale is currently creating a large whale (using a similar method and materials as shown in an INSET training day by Billie Evans.) The children have also drawn and painted images of whales and created seascape pictures to support the project. They meet once a week and have been working on it for approximately six weeks.

Singing

Avondale pupils across KS2 have been involved in weekly singing rehearsals with their class and music teacher. To perfect their singing, those children in the choir have attended weekly rehearsals to support those in class and contribute to the overall performance coming up in the autumn term. Some choir members are in year 6 and are keen to make the most of their singing rehearsals this year, in eager anticipation of joining their secondary choir.

They are hoping to have an end of year practice in front of KS2 to experience singing in front of an audience and filling a larger space than the music room.

Why take part?

Children in class

Quote from a year 6 choir member, Courtney Taylor aged 10, “I enjoy singing songs about my environment, it’s talking about our world and its future. The sad songs make me think of how grateful we should be; to enjoy what we have now and not to destroy it.”

The range of melodies has created a lot of emotion amongst the KS2 choir and rest of school. Children feel passionate about their environment and the living things in it, so these songs are creating quite a stir and increased awareness.

The vocabulary used translates to their writing in literacy. When assigned writing tasks linked to the environment (write a persuasive letter on why Avondale should maintain the gardening area), the children use key vocab from singing rehearsals to support their argument.

Teaching Aids have commented on the positive atmosphere amongst the class, when using a song from the project in a cool-down after a lesson or warm-up alongside brain gym.
