Bevington Primary School are in the process of putting together an art installation which will be going up in their new library. They have chosen the theme of ‘the rainforest’ as this links with several curriculum topics across the school. Class teachers are currently doing mini art projects in class such as making 3D models of animals, trees and plants and also doing landscape drawings and observations drawings of animals and plants. They are also going to make animals out of clay this term. All these aspects will fit together to make a rainforest installation in the new school library.

Singing

Years 4 and 5 classes are currently learning the songs from One Sun One World for the première in October. They have built singing into their music lessons and have additional singing sessions weekly. The school are linking the lyrics to the rainforest themed artwork project.

Creative curriculum

The school has been using the ‘Mantle of the Expert’ as a curriculum approach to explore the themes behind One Sun One World. This involves setting up an imaginary scenario then introducing a dilemma or problem that the children have to become experts in and have to take on this role to solve the problem. This approach uses drama to explore themes and ideas.

In geography, years 5 and 6 have been learning about ‘The Amazon Rainforest’. They have learned key map reading skills and have discovered what animals lurk in the layers of the rainforest. They have also compared their local environment to ‘The Amazon Rainforest’ and discussed and debated issues surrounding deforestation.

Literacy

Bevington have linked the topic of the rainforest to literacy in year 5 and we have written non chronological reports about the rainforest which are to be included as part of their library art installation. Bevington students are also entering the 'Writing Challenge' which will links to the ‘One Sun One World’ project.

Why take part?

"Children have been learning about their environment through the lyrics of the music. They have been curious about words that they were unfamiliar with and have asked lots of questions about the world they live in. The lyrics are teaching the children to consider their environment and its many aspects.

The children are also learning many skills through this project. It is such a large project and the children are excited to be working towards the final performance together. They are learning to work together and are instilling confidence in each other to create artwork and learn song lyrics and music so that everyone benefits in the long run.

The children have experienced working with a professional artist to create large 3D animals for a rainforest art installation. Children have seen that they can be creative with junk and newspapers and have learned that recycling is important but more importantly, that it can be fun!

Our whole school is getting involved with ‘The One Sun One World’ project. All classes from nursery to year 6 are creating artwork which will combine together to make our rainforest installation. We are looking forward to turning our new school library into a rainforest with snakes, lizards, jaguars, gorillas, parrots, frogs and many more! "
