Parkwood Hall School

Art

Parkwood Hall 1

Park Hall School have been working with an artist in residence, Billie Evans, on work linked to One Sun One World.

Phase 1: An outdoor sculpture area has been identified to develop a multi-sensory sculpture using the existing trees and semi wooded area outside the adventure playground.

Students have constructed sculptures of animals using recycled and natural materials which will link three existing trees. The sculptures will be animals that are not normally found residing in these parts, but will be designed to encourage wildlife in the area and develop student’s understandings of the natural world and how different species adapt to their environment. The sculptures will change with the seasons, and grow and develop with the environment. Plants will be selected and grown as part of the sculptures to enhance the senses.

Phase 2: Use will be made of the natural resources of water and wind to power kinaesthetic models made using natural and recycled products. These models will be used to enhance the science element of the National Curriculum and develop the student’s understanding of the changing environment.

Phase 3: This phase will be carried out using recycled materials to create a visually stimulating sound and music area to enhance the student’s auditory ability.

Singing

Students are practising the choir parts for the première of One Sun One World. They have enjoyed finding out what each of the verses is about. Their favourite song is 'Driven by the power of an engine'.

Creative music and drama workshop

Parkwood were  very fortunate to have worked with members of the Royal College of Music and the English Chamber Orchestra and two actors. At the workshops, they they worked with the whole lower school (students from ages 7 - 14) many of whom have communication problems whom are on the autistic spectrum and complex needs.

The students looked at the polar landscape and the environment  and identified some of the issues facing this environment.  They then identified how we can protect the environment  and make a difference to our planet. The students acted out life events in the arctic, composing and performing pieces of music to enhance the acting. They also made up a recycling rap with the musicians. The three days ended with a performance to the rest of the school and parents to share the work covered. During the performance the musicians played extracts from One Sun One World. The afternoon was a very moving experience for performers and the audience alike.

Creative curriculum

Students have looked at the school grounds and seen how animals have adapted to their environments. They have also looked at what we can do to protect the environment.

Why take part

"The students have gained an awareness of environmental issuses and looked at ways to overcome them. They have thought about the things they can do to protect their environment. Students have worked collaboratively both in their class groups and as a whole school and are looking forward to singing alongside the other schools in the borough. By incorporating the artwork and ceative workshops with ECM and RCM, actors and an artist in residence it has become a holistic project.

The work on One Sun One World prompted a class assembly on recycling.

The students are very excited about the thought of performing a world première in the Royal Albert Hall."
