St Mary Abbots Primary School
Art
Pupils from Year 1 drew and painted pictures of arctic animals (polar bears, arctic foxes and snowy owls) which were inspired by the drama project.
Creative music and drama
Pupils from year 1 participated in the project led by English Chamber Orchestra and Royal College of Music with the theme of polar bears and the arctic region.
Literacy
Year 1 undertook some literacy work linked to the One Sun One World project. The children learnt about polar bears and produced some factual writing about polar bears. They also found a PowerPoint presentation on the internet that helped you identify one polar bear from another! The children were very intrigued by this.
Why take part?
"The children thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the project. They enjoyed working with the various professionals, the actors and the musicians, leading the project.
The children also benefited from the cross curricular work done in class that linked to the theme of the polar bears in literacy and art. It gave a real purpose to the learning taking place in class and worked really well from a class teacher's point of view.
When Year 1 performed to the rest of the school, other children commented on how much they enjoyed the drama, singing and in particular the live music. Parents got involved in costume making. Other members of staff asked about future projects and are keen to be invoved in similar projects if they are available.
The One Sun One World project took a theme that also unites children at different levels, all in a highly appropriate way, given our current environmental concerns.
The parents were very impressed with the high level of performance. Everyone involved was enthusiastic and it is an experience that the children will always remember.
The professionals who worked with the class gave very positive feedback to the children, it was good for them to interact with people that come from outside the school.
It really gave me the inspiration to teach everyday skills through a new topic. I would love to be involved in any future projects."
